The Lion ROARS Tonight

After a relatively poor season, Roger Federer produced the kind of form that makes him the best player of all time at last, when he dispatched Novak Djokovic 7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 in the French Open semifinals. The victory finally put an end to the Serb's 2011 unbeatable run, leaving him only 1 win short of emulating John McEnroe's 42-0 record start to the 1984 season.
After a solid end of 2010, Federer lost momentum this year, winning only 1 title, in Doha, and losing all clashes with his younger rivals, i.e. Djokovic and Nadal. He seemed down and out and few were expecting him to shine on the French clay, his least favourite surface. However, with no pressure hanging on his shoulders and a rather 'you'll see' attitude, he has been imperial this week, coming through a tricky draw without losing a set. On his road to the semis he beat Feliciano Lopez, Frenchman Maxime Terreira, Janko Tipsarevic, his fellow countryman Stanislav Wawrinka and home hope Gael Monfils. Although Djokovic was the favourite, Federer came out the strongest, winning the first two sets by producing some of his most exquisite shots. He took the foot off the gas in the third though, allowing Novak to claw his way back into the match when the Serb served for a two sets all at 5-4 in the fourth. Facing the prospect of having to play a fifth set tomorrow morning, Roger couldn't let that happen. He dug deep and broke straight back. After saving a break point at 5 all, the Swiss put the matter at rest with an ace to win the fourth set 7-5 in the tie-break.
After having lost to the Serb in the last two Grand Slam semifinals, Federer finally got his vendetta. Djokovic's party required some spoiling and I just cannot envision a better person to do it than the Swiss. I am delighted by his feat, as Federer showed his class once more. With this performance, Roger proves for the millionth time why he is the best player in history.
It was a great win that brings some enjoyment to a rather disappointing Roland Garros. With all my favourites failing to leave up to the expectations, Federer can turn it around by winning the title on Sunday. Nadal can be a strong nut to crack, but considering his form, both mentally and physically, I am sure Roger can defy the odds and beat the Spaniard on his beloved clay. Please Federer, do whatever you  please, but just win the title. If not for you, for me. Tennis is becoming so sad lately that I need a reason for celebration. Anyway, thanks for making my day. However, don't forget: Sunday is another day that requires your contribution.
