The 2011 Fashion Scoop From DOWN UNDER

Not sure what happened to the sportswear manufacturers this year, but the Australian Open looked grotesque and scary. Starting with the green and pink Adidas outfits and finishing with Venus Williams and her odious pieces, this year was a genuine fashion faux pas.

Kimiko Date-Krumm - AdiPure
Alexandr Dolgopolov - AdiZero
Alicia Molik - AdiPure
Fernando Verdasco - AdiZero

Maria Kirilenko - AdiPure
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - AdiZero

Ana Ivanovic - AdiZero
Kimiko Date-Krumm, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Alicia Molik, even poor Maria Kirilenko (otherwise a true fashionista) had to endure the horrors of wearing that terrible combination of vibrant mint-green and intense cyclamen. Some did it with style though. Toning it down by adding a white skirt, respectively, a top, they've managed to look decent on court. However, there were cases (i.e. Dolgopolov or Date Krumm) when the outfits were visually challenging. Seeing them wear the green and pink cap-a-pie, I felt my eyes being bruised by the powerful colors. The only one who didn't get caught in the color game was Serbian beauty, Ana Ivanovic, who opted for a cool blue-green dress.

Venus Williams - EleVen
Venus Williams made a long awaited return by causing an uproar. Wearing her signature EleVen outfits, she walked on court with a short shirt (I assume it was intended to serve as a dress), really plain looking and totally unsuited for tennis. A more glamorous version was showcased in her third round encounter with Petkovic. Things didn't stop there unfortunately, as she introduced us to what she called the 'Alice in Wonderland' dress. Words are pointless in describing the monstrosity.
I've always been a fan of her style. She used to push fashion forward but her recent lack of results seems to have affected her inspiration. Get some treatment and return as strong as ever ;).

Rafael Nadal - 'Rafa Nadal' Group NIKE
The list of ill-inspired outfits continued with Rafa Nadal's atrocious orange T-shirt displaying an elaborated brown flame-like pattern. I am not of fan of the Spaniard's style, but this must be one of his worst looks. Also, the colour combination is off. The dusty brown of the pants matched with the bright orange, the black wristwatch, topped with some extra dark brown were a total mishit.

Caroline Wozniacki - Adidas by Stella McCartney
This year's championships had everything. I've noticed it bore a strong resemblance to the Oscar nominees list. Venus wasn't the only one to star in it. Caroline Wozniacki matched another Hollywood front-runner  in her 'Danish Swan' dress, courtesy of Stella McCartney. In her case, it actually proved an excellent choice, very bold too.

Roger Federer - 'Roger Federer' Group NIKE
Although lacking some colour pop, Roger Federer maintained his impeccable fashion style, wearing an elegant white polo T-shirt which he paired with a pair of dark grey shorts. I applaud the discrete yellow touches. They give this look a bit of edge.

Victoria Azarenka - NIKE
Victoria looked sensational in a pink Nike dress. The colors are really cool, so fresh and joyful and the overall look is just stunning, definitely one of the stand-out from this year's championships. Plus, I love the small detail, i.e. the heart shaped neckline. The Belorussian is upping her fashion game and now no one could argue she is wearing her heart on her sleeve-less garment.

Nadia Petrova - Ellesse
I think this is one of the worst tennis outfits ever. The ombre top (purple to light blue), the lambada skirt, or the fact that Petrova is a rather massive player, by no means feminine, make of this a huge fashion faux pas. I am really surprised that Nadia, an experienced player with a decent career, is lacking a serious sponsor which to provide her some decent clothing. Once a force to be reckoned with, Ellesse is now a sort of a joke when it comes to trendy, cool apparel.
